What is Web Writing?
May 22, 2007
Web writing is a term that I use to describe all the writing that exists on the Internet. Articles, press releases, advertising, sales pages, blogs etc, are all part of the World Wide Web of content. Although things are changing because of YouTube and other media, people communicate on the web through writing.
Web writing is different from other types of writing. You’ll need to understand the difference if you want to capture your reader and hold their attention.
In web writing, being brief is important. Write in short sentences. Your paragraphs should be short, too.
Human eyes weren’t made to stare a screen for hours on end! Make it easy for your readers by keeping things simple. Most readers scan over an article to see if they really want to spend time reading it. Large blocks of text look boring, but short paragaphs are inviting.
This doesn’t mean that you should skip over important points just to keep things short. Just sum up your points in simple sentences and paragraphs.
