If you build it, they WON’T come

Date November 26, 2007

Unlike Kevin Costner, we bloggers don’t have the luxury of building a blog and having it filled with dead baseball players, I mean, visitors automatically. At first, we all blog to no one. But eventually, visitors start to trickle in. Before you know it, you have a community of followers.

My promotion for this blog has been on the back burner for a while. I know there are those of you out there who are regular readers, but how did you get here?

I’ve mainly used signature links in forum posts to “advertise” my blog. I’ve commented on other blogs, too, and also joined My Blog Log. Other than that, I’ve been a lazy blog promoter.

How have you promoted your blog and what has worked best for you?

I started out on a community blog that went belly up. Those of us who became rather fond of reading each others’ blogs there became a ready audience for each other on our own new blogs. Otherwise I haven’t promoted since none of my blogs are actually informational. :)

I found you through Sharon Hurley Hall- and I’d say that’s pretty good promotion right there!

Well thanks to Michael Stelzner’s blog, you may have a lot more visitors now. :)) Congrats on the nomination, Courtney! I’ll link to you on my blog roll.

I honestly think it’s a combination of good content and social networking. You can’t have just one or the other going for you. I would highly recommend TropicalSEO.com if you want to crawl into the mind of a die-hard SEO expert. Pretty interesting stuff.

Being part of eMoms was, of course, instrumental in getting Freelance Parent introduced to a ready-made audience. I really try to interact on other people’s blogs, too, although I’m just not as good at it as I’d like to be. I get really into it for a while and then get too busy for a while and then get really into it for a while . . .

I don’t actually remember how I came across your blog, Courtney, but somehow I ended up putting it into my Google Reader. When I follow a link to a writing blog or just happen across one, I’ll often put it in my Reader for sort of a test run. If I find myself skipping the posts on a regular basis, then I go ahead and remove it.
