Maintaining a Web Writing business and having a Happy Spouse
As a work at home mom, there are a lot of challenges that you can encounter with time management and keeping balance. But all of these conflicts are even harder when you have a spouse who is unsupportive. Although my husband and I now work together from home, I’m sure there were times in the beginning where he wondered just what the heck I was doing on the computer so much.
Getting support from your spouse when you’re working on your online business can be tough when they don’t understand what you are spending your time on. I’ve found, from my own experience and from asking other wahm writers, that taking a page from Jerry McGuire and “Showing them the money!” is the best way to get support.
Pick a monthly bill and make it your goal to pay that bill each and every month. When you can show your spouse “Look, my writing paid the electricity bill this month” they’ll be much more on board.
Another way to get them involved is to outsource to them if you can. I’ve had my husband’s help on a few writing projects, and I’ve even helped him land some of his own. He’s my in-house proofreader. This gives him a perspective on what I do and helps us have a common ground when I want to discuss my business.
