How Was Your 2007?

Date December 30, 2007

This time of year, between Christmas and the New Year, I always feel like crawling into a comfy chair with paper and pen and planning my goals for the next year. I go back over my accomplishments of the last year and figure out how I can improve my game plan. It looks like I’m not the only one.

Melissa Donovan of Writing Forward had a great post this week on reviewing your freelance writing business, and making changes for the coming year.

Personally, there are a lot of things I want to change about my writing business in the next year. I know I need to get more organized with bookkeeping, and branch out into other areas of writing. Take some time off on the weekends is another big goal for me. Hopefully with some changes I’m making to my business, I’ll be able to shift my priorities a bit.

What are your writing goals for the new year?

Taking the weekends off seems like a pipe dream! I’d like to work on it myself…

This year, I hope to help more writers achieve success. I sometimes feel like I lucked into some excellent, high-paying gigs. However, there are plenty where those came from and it breaks my heart to see so many writers working for pennies. :(

    1. Actually finish my manuscript
    2. Build up my passive income to a level where I can work only part time
    3. Leverage my passive income to build a client list so that the part time is also working from home

I can’t imagine what I would do with weekends if I had them off. Go biking in the mountains? Run a marathon? Well, watch my Star Trek TNG collection most likely. Next year I want an agent for at least one of my manuscripts. I want to finish the ones that aren’t finished and get my PLR site moved to a better host.

I also want to help new writers less, as rude as that sounds. I feel like I’ve spent too much time on doing things like that, and they have been either unappreciative or actually attack me for trying to help them. So, I’d like to talk more with other web writers who have been at it for awhile and less with newbies. I hope that doesn’t sound horrible, but there it is.

My writing goals are to do as much as possible! 2007 has really seen the development of my confidence with writing for my website and blog and I have really enjoyed it. I have learnt so much about writing in the past year and I am just looking forward to developing my skills even further.

Melissa has a great blog - thanks for the reminder! :)
For goals in 2008, I’m going to allow the year to unfold as its meant too, trusting that it is all happening perfectly. I find that the less I try to control the outcomes of my life, the more fulfilling and fun it is.

When you get a chance stop by my blog post this week on using feng shui to help create abundance for your writing career.

    Cheers,
    Heather :)

Thanks for the link love Courtney! Like wordvixen, my number one goal for 2008 is to increase my passive income, and also to see my blog succeed. If I can do that, I’ll have time to achieve my other big goal - write a novel!

    Cheers!
    Melissa

LS- it doesn’t sound horrible at all. Perhaps you could build a list of resources (articles, websites, books) and put them on a page. That way if you’re approached for help you could just point them in the direction of the page. You’re still helping, but not taking up your time (after the first time) to do it. Plus, you could monetize it and… gee, you can tell where my minds at. :)

My big goal is to build my business to a point that I can make a living with my writing. It’s a big goal and I have a long way to go, but no one ever accused me of dreaming small.
There are a lot of little goals related to blogging and writing for clients, but it all points toward the big goal.

Good luck with the coming year!
    Jim
